What is virtualization and how does it work?

When you create a software or virtual-based product of applications, servers, storage, and networks, it helps to reduce IT expenses and boosts efficiency, this is virtualization. Virtualization can increase flexibility and scalability while reducing costs. It also allows for better workload mobility, as well as increased performance and availability of resources. In many cases, it automates operations and makes IT simpler to manage. Virtualization Courses teach you how to make the switch.

Benefits of Virtualization

  • Reduced operating costs
  • Minimized or eliminated downtime
  • Increased IT productivity, efficiency, agility, and responsiveness
  • Faster provisioning of applications and resources
  • Greater business continuity and disaster recovery
  • Simplified data center management

How Virtualization Works

There are limitations of servers, so IT organizations typically have multiple servers. They do not fully operate at their max capacity, which is pretty inefficient. In order to keep up with high storage and processing demands the costs are very high as well. Virtualization relies on software, but it stimulates hardware functionality to create a virtual computer system. It also enabled organizations to run on more than one virtual system, as well as with multiple operating systems and applications. The result is better efficiency.

Understanding Virtual Machines

Virtual computer systems are also referred to as virtual machines, simplified as “VM”. They have tightly isolated software containers that hold an operating system and applications inside. Virtual machines are self-contained and completely independent. By putting multiple VMs on a single computer, you can enable several operating systems and applications to run at the same time, on only one server. This server is often referred to as a host. Then, a thin layer of software called a “hypervisor” decouples the virtual machines from the host and allows them to work with each virtual machine as they are needed.

Forms of Virtualization

Server

Server virtualization enables multiple operating systems to run on one server. This makes it highly efficient. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Greater IT efficiencies
  • Reduced operating costs
  • Faster workload deployment
  • Increased application performance
  • Higher server availability
  • Eliminated server sprawl and complexity

Network

In this situation, the VM will completely reproduce a physical network. During network virtualization, it will allow applications to run on a virtual network as if they were running on a physical one. However, there will be greater operational benefits and all the hardware independencies of virtualization. This is a logical option as it connects many different devices, such as logical ports, switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, and VPNs.
