On average, people go through a career change 3 to 7 times during their lifetime. If you find yourself in this position looking for a better opportunity, or just starting on your career path, becoming an IT professional or cybersecurity specialist might be the right path for you. There has never been a more opportune time to get started, and there is a lot of potential within the industry.

It is a growing industry with many job opportunities.

Since 2011 there has been a 0% unemployment rate in cybersecurity. In the past 6 years job postings for the industry have grown 94%. Since May of 2021, there have been 500 thousand cybersecurity jobs created. These are not just one type of job either – as there are a number of paths to take within cybersecurity. From analyst to manager and responder to ethical hacker, you will be able to find the right fit for you. The projection for future growth in the industry is just as high. As long as there are electronic devices storing information and connecting to the internet, cybersecurity will be a necessity.

It can be an easy transition if you already have some IT or security experience.

If you have prior experience in programming, computer science, or security, transitioning to cybersecurity can be a very simple process. Any of those fields involve at least some amount of cybersecurity or computer security. That is knowledge that you can use to your advantage. Any amount of experience lends to better opportunities within the field.

In an industry full of professionals with bachelor’s or master’s degrees in computer science or other related fields, our partners at CompTIA reported that “19% of cybersecurity specialist [job] postings require less than a bachelor’s degree, which is higher than more advanced job titles.” One of the biggest reasons why the employment opportunity is so high is that the skills and education gap is so large. Many college students who would be qualified for these jobs move into other related fields such as computer science, artificial intelligence, and programming.

Industry certificates are readily available.
