Why Musk, Bezos, and Gates Are All Eyeing Greenland

Greenland may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about tech innovation—but that’s changing fast. Reports show that some of the biggest names in tech—Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Peter Thiel—are now exploring strategic ventures in Greenland.

The reason? A potent mix of climate advantage, rare earth minerals, and vast land for cloud computing infrastructure.

Vice President JD Vance recently announced a U.S. delegation visit to Greenland to explore opportunities in data centres and critical mineral extraction. For tech giants building the future—space exploration, clean energy, AI training—Greenland is increasingly becoming a strategic goldmine.

What’s Driving the Interest?

  • Climate-Cooled Data Centres: Greenland’s cold environment can naturally cool massive server farms, drastically cutting operational costs.
  • Rare Earth Resources: Greenland is rich in rare earth elements—critical for building EVs, solar panels, wind turbines, and semiconductors.
  • Geopolitical Positioning: With rising tensions around China’s dominance in rare earths, U.S. tech companies are looking to diversify their sources.

This could lead to Greenland becoming the next big hub for cloud services, satellite communications, and clean-tech manufacturing.

Ascend Education’s Take

From Ascend’s perspective, this move underscores how geography is becoming a critical factor in the tech supply chain.

“Tech education can no longer be confined to coding languages and software,” says a domain expert at Ascend. “Students and professionals must also understand global supply chains, geopolitics, and environmental tech to truly stay ahead.”

Ascend also sees a clear shift toward green tech careers—everything from cloud infrastructure specialists to energy-efficient computing experts.

“We’re updating our curriculum to reflect these realities—offering training modules on sustainable data centre management and rare earth supply analysis,” adds the expert.

The takeaway? Greenland’s rise as a tech hotspot is not just a blip—it’s a sign of the broader, more sustainable, and more geopolitically informed direction the tech industry is heading.
